How Renan Barao keeps it clean until he’s out of fight camp

Q What are your fight-camp staples?

A During camp, I eat a lot of chicken, plenty of salads, some eggs and lots of fruits. Those are the things I eat for pretty much every meal.

Q What do you gorge on?

A When I am in camp I don’t get to gorge on anything, but outside of camp, I love to eat sandwiches – all kinds of sandwiches.

Q Do you allow yourself cheat meals?

A Not too often but when I do it’s usually pizza. That’s my treat, my favorite cheat – any kind of pizza.

Q What’s your favorite sauce?

A Ketchup. I put it on almost everything. Seriously. Practically everything is better with ketchup.

Q Do you like any fast food?

A McDonald’s. I know that it is not the best food for an athlete, but I love food from McDonald’s.

Q Do you have a signature dish?

A I don’t really cook at all. My friends and my family do all the cooking for me.

Q What’s your favorite fight-camp meal?

A Chicken and pasta. It doesn’t sound exciting but I look forward to it as it’s healthy, it fills me up and I always train harder the day after pasta.

Q What do you eat after weigh-ins?

A This is going to make me sound pretty boring, but more chicken and pasta. It’s important to keep your focus in the final hours and eating bad food would be a mistake.

Q What do crave after a fight?

A I love all kinds of pizza, as I explained already, but I really like Brazilian style after a fight.

Q Which nationality of food is your favorite?

A I love Brazilian and American food. Pizzas, burgers and barbecue mostly.

LOVES

Ketchup

Keep that sauce on the shelf. Even a tiny 10g serving of Heinz’s red stuff has 2.36g of sugar.

THE FACTS

Brazilian-style pizza is usually on a thin crust and features a very thin layer of unseasoned tomato sauce. Sweet toppings like banana, condensed milk and guava marmalade are popular.

THE STATS

McDonald’s claims it sells 75 burgers every second globally and nine million pounds of fries every day.

THE INFO

Chicken and pasta is a staple with most athletes as it also provides plenty protein, complex carbs and clean calories to fuel back-to-back workouts.
